Sustainable farming means delicious Scotch Beef from Aldi


Meet the Barbour family. They have been producing high quality 100% Scotch Beef for four generations from their stunning farm in south west Scotland.

Richard Barbour prides himself on making sure his Aberdeen Angus herd are healthy and happy, allowing them to roam free on his land and feed on fresh grass.

For food lovers, Aberdeen Angus steak is renowned for its tenderness, flavour and juiciness, with the Highland breed particularly known for its marbling.

It’s a favourite with chefs and the iconic black breed features on the menu of top restaurants around the world.

Richard is delighted to be working with Aldi to supply award-winning Scotch Beef at a great price.

“We have worked with Aldi in Scotland for three years and we really love the way they are committed to supplying high quality products at a good price,” says Richard.

“We’re proud to think that our award-winning beef is on sale in Aldi stores. It is matured it for 36 days which gives it the wonderful taste and texture and we’re sure Aldi’s customers will enjoy it.”

Richard is a committed advocate of sustainable farming practices.

“We realise that we have a real responsibility to be as kind to the environment as possible so all the waste from the farm goes into our anaerobic digestion plant where it’s turned back into enough energy to power 8-10,000 local homes,” he explains.

Only cattle that are born, reared and processed in Scotland can carry the Scotch Beef label.

There is a sweet spot when it comes to maturing beef, where maximum tenderness is achieved, and the flavour has developed just enough. After lengthy taste tests, 36 days was the perfect time for Aberdeen Angus ribeye, sirloin, rump and roasting joint cuts.

Aldi pride themselves in offering the best quality Scottish produce at everyday amazing value.

His herd are bred from local dairy cows meaning they are much more sustainable and every couple of days they are moved to fresh grass on the Dumfriesshire farm.

The process is not dissimilar to the way cattle naturally graze in the wild and it contributes to the carbon cycle as they fertilise each paddock before they move on.

Richard and his wife Sara have two daughters Lucy, 11, and Annie, 10, who are growing up understanding a sustainable way of farming.

Richard adds: “My family has been farming here for almost 100 years and we’d love it if the girls become the fifth generation to take over one day.”
