UEFA reviews Champions League final chaos after Hogan ‘horrified’

UEFA has announced that it has commissioned an independent report into what is being described as ‘chaos’ during the UEFA Champions League final in Paris last Saturday.

The comprehensive review is said to examine ‘decision making, responsibility and behaviours’ of all entities involved in the final.

Liverpool FC’s Chief Executive, Billy Hogan, wants more details about the independent report, with over 5,000 fans submitting accounts of the Stade de France events within 24 hours.

Hogan said in a statement: “Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to submit their experiences. Obviously it’s a tremendous amount of information so we’d ask you to bear with us as we work through that detail.

“But I’ve spent time over the course of today reviewing some of the information and, honestly, I’m horrified by the way some men, women, children – able bodied, less able bodied – have been indiscriminately treated over the course of Saturday.

“My heartfelt thoughts go out to anybody who had the experience of those unacceptable events on Saturday evening. We’re working right now with our Foundation team, who run outreach programmes and crisis support, to see how to guide people towards the appropriate support for those fans affected.”

The report will be independently compiled and Dr. Tiago Brandão Rodrigues from Portugal will lead the production of this review. Rodrigues is a Member of the Portuguese Parliament and the President of the Parliamentary Committee of Environment and Energy.

“There isn’t a lot of detail at this stage, it’s an evolving process, but we want to ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to getting the facts about what happened on Saturday in Paris,” Hogan added.

The organisation also highlighted that evidence will be gathered from all relevant parties and the findings of the independent report will be made public once completed and upon receipt of the findings, UEFA will evaluate the next steps.
